Donor Tear Down

In the beginning.........

Our neighbor's misfortune was our good fortune.  After an accidental meeting with a telephone pole our Cobra donor was born (or died).  The car ran and could be driven when we bought it, and it had many upgrades.

Thanks to Ryan Ford for parting with his Mustang at a reasonable price (and allowing us to take it apart in his garage).

Before we started it looked pretty good from the front.  The back end was another story.

The wiring harness gave us a good fight, but in the end we kicked its butt.

With a little more work the donor was picked clean. DonorStripped02.jpg (59279 bytes) DonorStripped01.jpg (63415 bytes)

After persuading a couple of neighbors to help, we were able to pull the engine out.  We should have read the manual where it says to duct tape the tail end of the transmission so the fluid won't all drain out on the floor.  Thank god it didn't happen in our garage.  Apologies go to Ryan.

Here we are posing with our greatest achievement to date on the project.  The engine came out smoothly (except for the cruise control cable we had to persuade with a hack saw).  We then tied it to the back of Amal's Rodeo, for the short 1/2 mile trip to the Last Chance Garage.  Due to the set up of the engine hoist, we had to walk along side the engine for the trip.  Donny was beat, so Damian had to walk most of the way. The filler neck was a little tough to get out due to the location of the collision damage.  The fan shroud may need to be replaced.

One of the upgrades on our donor was a disc brake rear end (off a Thunderbird SC),  tubular control arms and polyurethane bushings. Transmission & Clutch2.jpg (141109 bytes) Rear Axle & Driveshaft2.jpg (139144 bytes)
